Friends of the Children has been empowering children to break the generational cycle of poverty for nearly 25 years, and now operates in 15 locations. Friends of the Children – SF Bay Area (Friends-SF), a separate 501c3 corporation, opened its doors in 2017, we now serve 64 of San Francisco’s most vulnerable children, and we plan eventually to serve at least 400 youth.

We use a scientifically validated methodology to identify the kindergarteners facing the greatest barriers. We hire full-time, salaried Professional Mentors -- not volunteers -- to support those children all the way through high school graduation. 12-1/2 years, no matter what! We are systematic and evidence-based, and the evidence demonstrates that this incredible model works. Our children shed the falsely low expectations imposed upon them, graduate high school, avoid the juvenile justice system and teen parenting, and go on to lead healthy, productive lives. See

We’re looking to hire a Development and Communications Director who will use their passion, experience, communication skills and entrepreneurial spirit to help us build a first-class Development Department that provides the financial support we need to meet our ambitious scaling plan and to serve as many children as possible.

If you are the dynamic, entrepreneurial development professional who will help us scale this exciting new organization, here’s what we have to offer you:

A compelling mission and an evidence-based model with a demonstrated history of helping the most vulnerable children break the generational cycle of poverty -- in short, a story that sells itself to potential funders

• The opportunity to join a lean management team with a passionate, whatever-it-takes, start-up approach, yet still have the support of a mature and successful National organization

• An ambitious scaling plan that will enable you to grow rapidly from being our only development professional to becoming the head of a multi-person Development Department at a mature and widely respected institution

• An experienced and committed Executive Director who will partner with you in our development efforts

• A Program Director, an Operations Manager and Program Staff, all of whom appreciate the role they must play to make our development efforts succeed

• A development infrastructure that includes a development plan, eTapestry database, regular newsletters, hard and soft-copy and electronic materials, photos and videos

• Substantial start-up capital, a strong base of current and potential funders, and an actively involved and well-connected Board of Directors –- a great foundation on which to build our development efforts

• A team of co-workers that shares a passion for our mission

• A respect for work-life balance that will encourage you to work hard but support your efforts to keep your batteries charged

• A competitive salary, appropriate to your experience level, and a full package of benefits

• Most of all, the opportunity to serve children facing incredible challenges and to help them change their life stories
